Laois roads set for repairs under €1m Storm Chandra fund revealed

By Sandra Malone, Leinster Express

The list of roads in Laois which will be repaired as part of the €1 million funding to address damage caused by Storm Chandra has been revealed.

In June, the Department of Transport announced funding of €40 million to address the damage caused to regional and local roads by Storm Chandra, of which Laois was allocated €1 million.

This funding is on top of the €31 million that will be spent on upgrading and maintaining the road network in County Laois this year.

An assessment was carried out in March which found that 130 roads across the country required complete reconstruction and over 440 had significant damage following Storm Chandra in January. Several bridge structures were also damaged and made impassable.

Laois was one of the counties which experienced extensive damage to roads during the storm.

15 roads across the county will be repaired as part of the allocated Storm Chandra funding.

These include the L-2778 at Rahanavannagh/Blandsfort Cross, the R-432 at Raggesttstown Ballinakill, the L-5733 at Clonking, the L-2113 at Boglone, the R-432 at Thornberry, the L-6831 at the Dysart N80 crossroads, and the L-67202 in Abbeyleix at the Rathmoyle Road Crossing near Peacocks.

The N77 at The Island in Abbeyleix will also be included in the repair works.

Also listed is the L-6008 at Boleybeg in Clonaslee, the L-7996 at Hollymount/Shrule, the L-7872 at Doonane/Farnans, the L-39333 from Vicarstown to Merrymount, the L-78791 at Strifeland Kilcruise, and the L-20954 at Summergrove and the L-60932 at Mucklone in Mountmellick.

In comparison to Laois, some neighbouring counties have received more than double the funding that was announced by the Department of Transport.

Carlow received €2.79 million, while Kilkenny was allocated €3.46 million.
