Dangerous footpath in Laois town prompts fears for elderly pedestrians

By Sandra Malone, Leinster Express

There have been concerns raised about a badly damaged footpath in a Laois town, which is particularly dangerous for elderly people.

Laois County Council was requested by Councillor Paschal McEvoy to inspect the surface of the footpath stretching from Dunnes Pub to the local shops in Stradbally .

“It’s in extremely bad repair. It’s a big wide path there. It badly, badly needs to be looked at and resurfaced,” Cllr McEvoy said at the recent meeting of the Graiguecullen/Portarlington MD.

He stressed that “it’s not a very big area but is very dangerous for old people walking along there.”

As the footpath is located along the N80, the Road Design section of Laois County Council said it would engage with Transport Infrastructure Ireland on the issue.

Road Design assured that a full assessment of the area would be carried out and all possible funding sources explored.

The Senior Executive Engineer for the MD, Tom Drennan, told Cllr McEvoy that the council could come up with a design for the footpath and assess the costs for the works, but it will require the approval of TII.
