Calls for safety works after tractor and trailer overturns on Laois road

Safety works need to be carried out on a Laois road after a tractor and trailer overturned on it recently, a local councillor has said.
Laois County Council was called to address a collapsing roadside drain at Whitebog in Ballylinan by Councillor Aisling Moran recently.
Speaking at the May meeting of the Graiguecullen/Portarlington MD, Cllr Moran asked the council to install passing bays on the road as it is too narrow for two vehicles to safely pass when meeting.
“There was a tractor and trailer that overturned there. The road is too narrow at that point,” Cllr Moran told the council.
In response to the motion, Laois County Council have assessed the drainage issues on the road and confirmed that intervention is required.
Works to repair the drain have been scheduled to be carried out in the coming weeks.
However, the council stated that the installation of a passing bay is not possible due to the lack of verge along the roadway.
Senior Executive Engineer for the MD, Tom Drennan, explained that the council is very limited in terms of any traditional passing bay there.
Although he said that this will be further assessed when reinstating the road after the drainage installation works.
