The provision of a new special class has been announced for one Gaelscoil located in County Kildare.

This announcement forms part of the seventh phase of approvals for special classes nationwide for the 2026 to 2027 school year.

An additional 36 classes have been sanctioned by the government today, bringing the total approved so far this year to 464, and it is understood that further decisions expected in the coming weeks.

Welcoming the news that Gaelscoil Chill Dara will get a new special class, Fianna Fáil Senator O'Loughlin said: "These extra classes will make it easier for more students to access the supports they need within their own communities."

The Newbridge-based representative, who also has a background in teaching, added: "It’s essential that our education system continues to evolve to meet changing needs, ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed, with strong local provision playing a key role in that progress."

Senator O'Loughlin made headlines earlier this month when she described the confirmation that Kildare County Council was in the final stages of acquiring Moore Abbey in Monasterevin as a 'breakthrough for the local community'.
