Kildare County Council announces development of 'bridge strike' app

Kildare County Council (KCC) has announced that it is developing a 'bridge strike' app to assist County Kildare residents.
The information was highlighted by KCC at the most recent Athy Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Monday, May 18.
The matter was raised in response to a motion which was submitted by Fianna Fáil councillor Veralouise Behan.
She requested KCC to carry out ‘a bridge survey throughout the Athy MD, as there are quite a few stone bridges in need of repairs’.
Her motion was seconded by Labour Party Cllr Mark Leigh.
In response to Cllr Behan’s motion, KCC issued the following report: “KCC has received an allocation of €26,100 from the Department of Transport to carry out bridge inspections across the county.
“The [MD] team is carrying out inspections on bridges each week, with 36 inspections completed thus far in 2026 out of 100 scheduled inspections.”
KCC continued: “There are at least 2,000 locations on our system that need to be surveyed, and the team are working through this list to identify locations for inspection; they also engage with each MD to identify structures for inclusion in future inspections.”
In addition, KCC revealed that this team is also developing a ‘bridge strike’ app for members of the public and elected members, in order for them to report issues going forward.
However, KCC concluded by pointing out that the team ‘carries out inspections across the county’, and as a result, it ‘does not have the resources to focus on one MD at a time’.
Following this, Cllr Behan told KCC that she welcomed the report.
She also thanked KCC for its recent works on bridges located within the MD.
