Development proposed for site of former garda station in Kildare

A housing development has been proposed for the site of a former garda station in County Kildare .
A presentation on the Part 8 process for the proposed development was shown to councillors in attendance at the latest Athy Municipal District (MD), which took place on Monday, September 21 last.
During the presentation, a member of the Architectural Services division at Kildare County Council (KCC) explained that the funding was originally secured back in 2023 and added that the site, which is located on the Barrack Road in Balltore, will be redeveloped into six homes.
Of these six homes, three will be two-bed units, two will be one-bed units, and one will be a three-bed unit. There will also be 10 car parking spaces, and a currently unknown number of bicycle spaces.
The KCC rep also said that the new homes will be in line with KCC’s aim to promote family-friendly and age-friendly / accessible housing.
Furthermore, they revealed that the site has been cleared of any flooding risks and sewage-related issues.
The Part 8 proposal was overwhelmingly welcomed by the MD’s councillors, with one of them, Fine Gael Cllr Ivan Keatley (who appeared by virtual means) remarking that it had ‘a fantastic design and layout’.
He then proposed to approve the Part 8, and this was seconded by Cllr Breslin.
Following a brief discussion, all councillors agreed to approve the Part 8.
