A developer has applied for permission to build apartments at a prime location next to an historic building in a south Kerry town.

Fertha Quay Developments Ltd plans to erect the eight flats across from Cahersiveen’s Old Barracks on Quay Street.

The development will involve demolishing the existing building before constructing eight one-bed apartments along with on-site parking, roadways and footpaths.

The apartments will be arranged within a two-storey stepped terrace building with ground floor and first floor flats.

Two units will be provided as part of the development for social housing, while five parking spaces will be provided on the 0.065 hectare site.

All apartments will have their own recreational areas by providing individual gardens or balconies which will meet or exceed the minimum requirements.

The application highlights that two-storey dwellings appear frequently along semi-detached and detached houses along Quay Street and the adjacent Bridge Street.

“The evaluation of local character and the existing architectural language informed aspects of the proposed design and materiality,” it reads.

A rendered finish is proposed for the exterior facade and the roof finish is proposed to be with a blue/black slate.

The site has had a flood risk assessment undertaken and the site has a low risk of flooding in the future which makes it suitable for development.

Across Bridge Street is the 19th century Old Barracks Heritage Centre which is built in Scottish Baronial style.

The Sive Mineral site is also on the other side of Quay Street
