A Kerry TD has urged the government to take “a once-in-a-generation” opportunity to repurpose a key heritage building in Killarney.

Sinn Féin TD for Kerry Pa Daly called for “decisive action” over the St Finan’s site as the Land Development Agency (LDA) continues its examination of the former psychiatric hospital.

“St. Finan’s is part of Killarney’s history and heritage, and a landmark building that should remain in public ownership,” said Deputy Daly.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to do something meaningful with this site whether in housing, education, community services, or healthcare.”

“The idea that this historic property could be sold off because of cost concerns is deeply worrying. Government needs to step up, commit funding and ensure this remains a public asset.”

The HSE has confirmed that it intends to dispose of the former psychiatric hospital and surrounding lands to private developers if a viable public project cannot be progressed.

The LDA is currently examining the site to determine development costs, risks and funding requirements, while Kerry County Council warns it would need major government funding to take on a redevelopment project.

The property includes approximately 30 acres and a protected limestone building dating back to 1850, which has remained largely unused since 2012.

“We understand that the redevelopment of St. Finan’s is complex, and that there are real costs involved, but complexity cannot be an excuse for inaction,” said Deputy Daly

“The LDA, the HSE and Government departments must work together on a viable plan that prioritises public use, rather than simply selling the land to the highest bidder.”
