Kerry schools set for significant refurbishment through climate scheme
The KerrymanKerry schools are set to receive significant refurbishment investment as the government prioritises sustainable upgrades and science education.
The 2026 Climate Action Summer Works scheme will see €90m invested over 297 projects nationwide, with a particular emphasis on school science laboratories.
The works will cover energy efficiency improvements, science lab refurbishments and electrical upgrades.
Kerry TD Michael Cahill expressed his delight at Kerry schools being included, saying it was “hugely important for students, teachers and local communities”.
“Modern, energy-efficient school buildings make an enormous difference to the learning environment and to the day-to-day experience of students and staff.
“I particularly welcome the schools in Kerry that have secured funding under this round, including those receiving upgrades to science laboratories. This targeted investment will strengthen STEM education locally and ensure our young people have access to high-quality facilities that match the needs of the new Leaving Certificate curriculum.”
The programme supports schools in improving insulation, upgrading windows, installing LED lighting and adding EV charging infrastructure.
Schools such as St. Michael’s College, Listowel, CBS Secondary School, Tralee, and Castleisland Community College, will also undergo science lab refurbishment.
“These works not only upgrade school buildings but also contribute to our national climate-action goals, a win-win for education and the environment,” said Deputy Cahill.
“This is a very positive day for school communities in Kerry. I will continue to work...to ensure that investment in Kerry’s education infrastructure remains a priority, year after year.”
