Kerry County Council has received two local government awards for its work in Irish culture and urban revival.

The council’s Blas Beo initiative took home the ‘Celebrating Irish Language & Culture Award’, while the Island of Geese regeneration project received the ‘Urban Revival Award’.

The Excellence in Local Government Awards, hosted by Chambers Ireland in partnership with the housing department, recognises innovation, leadership, and best practice across Ireland’s local authorities, with over 98 projects shortlisted nationwide.

The ceremony was held on November 27 and marked the 22nd year that awards have been running.

Blas Beo was developed at the cultural hub of Teach Siamsa, Finuge, and is a community-led programme that celebrates and strengthens the Irish language across North Kerry.

Adult learners keen to get speaking ‘as Gaeilge’ took part in the Irish language scheme over a number of weeks earlier this year and received special certificates of participation.

The course was met with great enthusiasm by its participants and proved to be a tremendous success in improving the speaking ability of students.

The other winning project, the Island of Geese ‘New Urban Quarter’ initiative, transformed the former brownfield site of the Old Denny Factory into the Island of Geese urban quarter in the centre of Tralee.

Guided by the town’s masterplan, the project marks a significant step in Tralee’s regeneration.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael Foley, paid tribute to the staff and management of Kerry County Council on securing two awards

He said they reflect the dedication and collaborative spirit of Council staff, partners, and local communities who continue to drive innovative projects across Kerry.
