Kerry County Council has launched a €663,000 climate programme for community groups in a bid to boost environmental action in the county.

The initiative, funded through the government, is aimed at the voluntary sector and other local organisations who are looking to build more sustainable communities.

Applicants to the programme can be awarded up to €100,000, with the potential for 100 per cent of costs to be paid for.

Kerry TD Michael Cahill welcomed the announcement, saying the funding would empower local communities across Kerry to take meaningful climate and environmental action.

“This is a hugely positive announcement for Kerry. The €663,000 allocation will allow Kerry County Council to work hand-in-hand with community groups, schools, and local organisations to deliver real, practical climate solutions, from community energy initiatives and sustainable travel projects to waste reduction and local biodiversity efforts,” said Deputy Cahill.

“Communities are at the heart of climate action. This funding will help ensure that Kerry continues to lead by example, taking action locally to make a global difference.”

Community groups are invited to submit proposals under several categories including community energy, travel, food and waste, shopping and recycling, and local climate and environmental action.

Grants will be awarded under three thresholds, with small grants up to €20,000, medium from €20,000 to €50,000, and large-scale grants up to €100,000.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Councillor Michael Foley said:

“It is wonderful to see the extension of the Community Climate Action Programme in County Kerry and I would encourage the various community groups throughout the county, big or small, to look at what difference they can make at a local level to affect climate change.”

Community climate action officer Caroline Toal said communities are at the heart of how the council delivers climate action in Kerry.

“This programme empowers communities in Kerry to take meaningful climate action at a local level. Alongside Kerry County Council Climate Action Plan, it’s an important step in building a low-carbon, sustainable future for the county,” said Ms Toal.

Eligible applicants must be not-for-profit groups based in the Kerry County Council area and registered with the Kerry PPN, or linked with recognised networks with proper governance structures.

The programme, which is funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, opened for applications on Tuesday, 28th October 2025, and will remain open until Monday, 22nd December 2025.
