Kerry County Council has been shortlisted for just one local government award this year despite 102 shortlisted candidates for a range of awards.

The council was shortlisted under the ‘Supporting Tourism’ category for the upgrading of the Bray Head Signal Tower on Valentia Island.

Meanwhile, Cork County Council has been shortlisted eight times and Limerick City and County Council eight times also.

The Excellence in Local Government Awards are an annual fixture which celebrate local authority projects across 16 categories.

Last year Kerry County Council (KCC) received two local government awards for its work in Irish culture and urban revival.

This year KCC will battle it out against six other councils for the ‘Supporting Tourism’ award.

John Cummins, Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, congratulated the elected local authorities, calling it a ‘considerable achievement’ to be shortlisted.

“My Department and I are pleased to continue our long-standing support for these awards, which are an important opportunity to acknowledge the commitment of local authorities to public service in their communities,” he said.
