Kerry councillor claims his area’s roads are not being treated the same as Killarney or Tralee
The KerrymanA Kerry councillor has claimed his area’s roads are not being treated with the same importance as other parts of the county.
Councillor Jackie Healy-Rae said it was a ‘sad state of affairs’ that the Killarney road roundabout in Castleisland hadn’t been resurfaced in four years.
At a Castleisland/Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District (MD) meeting, Cllr Healy-Rae raised the need for resurfacing works at the roundabout on the N23.
He claimed every roundabout in the county had received treatment apart from this one and questioned whether Killarney and Tralee MDs were being prioritised.
“You can imagine how frustrating this is for us,” said Cllr Healy-Rae
“Why are we not being looked after in that manner as well?”
While Kerry County Council said the roundabout was next on the list, Cllr Healy-Rae argued that this wasn’t ‘positive’ news.
He said the reason Castleisland was separated from the Killarney MD was for its own autonomy, budget and representation, which he felt wasn’t being recognised in this case.
“We don’t want to be next up and last. Is it because we’re not Killarney or Tralee?” he said.
“We want to be treated the same as Killarney, and we want to be treated the same as Tralee, because we deserve to be.”
“It’s a fairly sad state of affairs that we don’t have the wherewithal to tar a roundabout that needs it…it’s the last 3 or 4 years that it needed to be done.”
The council maintained that the MDs were treated equally and said an application for funding had been made for resurfacing works.
