The wider Summerhill College community came together on Monday last for what was described as a “Very special occasion in the history of the school” as the first sod was turned by Bishop Michael Duignan to mark the beginning of the school’s extension.

The new extension will consist of four classrooms, two science labs, a room for construction studies and two SEN (special education needs) rooms.

Welcoming students, teachers, members of the Board of Management and invited dignitaries, Acting Principal Aileen Cawley said, “Today is a very special occasion as we gather to celebrate a vision.

She added, “We gather to celebrate a vision”, saying “The ground will hold the hope of generations to come.

"Catholic education is never built alone. It is built by prayer and shared practice.”

Speaking about the new extension, Ms Cawley said, “It will create new spaces for belonging, where every student is valued.”

Bishop of Clonfert and Galway and Kilmacduagh Michael Duignan turned the first sod to mark the beginning of the new development and recalled how not many thought an extension would be needed after the new school was opened in 2013.

"I 2011 or 2012 I stood not far from here when we turned the sod on the new building. It was organised hastily to ensure the Minister for Education didn’t change his mind.

Speaking about what he referred to as a “New and important development,” Bishop Jones said, “It has been part of the college’s strategic plan. It has taken a long to come to come to this stage.

I would like to thank the design team and the public representatives and I would like to acknowledge the students who always embody the spirit of this place in a wonderful way. It makes this college the great college that it is.”

Bishop Duignan added, “Inclusion is at the heart of the gospel. These facilities will help live out that aspect of the gospel. May God continue to guide you here and in life.”

Ciaran Flynn, Head of Student’s Council, recalled being a second year student when the sod turning was taking place for the new pitch while he was looking out the window of his maths class. He spoke about the impact of that pitch on school life saying, “Small beginnings lead to lasting change.”

Ciaran said it was a “Distinct pleasure” to be representing his fellow students on the significant occasion as “We mark the next step of the college’s growth and journey.”

Eugene Toolan, Chairman of the Board of Management paid tribute to Paul Keogh, Summerhill principal saying, “Without his unwavering perseverance we would not be here today.” He also acknowledged the role of Ms Cawley who he said is “Providing exemplary leadership.”

Mr Toolan thanked college staff saying, “No doubt these facilities will further enhance your work. Mr Toolan also acknowledged the contribution of donors, Sligo County Council for their help in gaining planning permission as well as politicians both local and national.
