Fury over damage to toilets at popular coastal spot

By Rachel McLaughlin, Donegal Daily

After a busy weekend that saw visitors flock to Donegal’s beaches and piers, a local councillor has hit out over the shocking state in which public toilets at Magheraroarty were left.

Cllr Denis McGee of the 100% Redress Party vented his anger after finding a toilet seat broken off and left lying on the floor, a shattered bin and a toilet completely clogged with waste.

Cllr McGee said the apparent vandalism was particularly frustrating given the efforts made to secure public toilets for the busy coastal area.

“We fought hard to get the toilets here in Magheraroarty, and to just show disrespect and stuff, it just really f***ing pisses me off,” he said.

“Everybody puts in a lot of effort to make sure that we have these toilets here.

“But if you just come in and decide to break the seat, just keep blocking the toilet, there’s something f***ing seriously wrong with you.”

The need for better public toilets and increased maintenance at Magheraroarty has been raised on a number of occasions.

Cllr McGee acknowledged that the current facilities need improvement, but said that was no excuse for treating them with disrespect.

“Show a bit of respect, the same respect that you would show in your own neighbourhood,” he said.

“I don’t know who has been in here and done this, but it’s not right. We don’t have a lot here.

“We need better toilets, we know that. We need better facilities, we need more maintenance, we need a lot of stuff around here.

“But what we have, we’re proud of, and we don’t appreciate somebody just coming in and breaking the toilet and the toilet seat and just blocking everything up.

“It’s a pretty sad reflection on whoever done it.”
