Dún Laoghaire recognised for its night-time economy as a ‘safe evening destination’

Dún Laoghaire town centre has been recognised for its evening and night-time economy with a new international accreditation.

The Purple Flag accreditation, run by a UK-based organisation, identifies towns and city centres that offer a high standard of entertainment, dining, culture and hospitality between the hours of 5pm to 5am.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (DLR) management said the recognition follows new safety, business and community-led programmes that the council had introduced to build the town’s reputation as a “safe evening destination”.

“This is a proud moment for Dún Laoghaire and for the wider county," said Cllr Jim Gildea, Cathaoirleach of DLR.

“The Purple Flag status highlights not only the vibrancy of our town after dark, but also our collective commitment to safety, inclusivity, and community wellbeing. It sends a clear signal that Dún Laoghaire is open, welcoming and full of life.”

The recognition looks at safety, accessibility and inclusivity for residents and local businesses in each town or city assessed by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), which awards the Purple Flag.

DLR chief executive Frank Curran said the council worked with local businesses, An Garda Síochána and other local groups through an 18-month assessment period to secure the recognition.

“This accreditation is a significant endorsement of the work under way across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown to support vibrant, safe and sustainable town centres,” said Mr Curran.

"From its coastal walks and cultural venues to its cafés, restaurants, pubs, festivals and year‑round events, Dún Laoghaire continues to develop as a welcoming, vibrant and well‑managed destination that balances activity with safety and quality of life.”

Colette O’Sullivan, chief executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Chamber of Commerce, said Dún Laoghaire is a “place to enjoy confidently after dark”.

“This accreditation is a testament to the incredible collaboration across our business and community networks. Purple Flag is about more than nightlife – it’s about creating a place where people feel confident, comfortable and excited to spend time in the evening,” she said.
