Belgooly, Co. Cork · Garda release issued

Four young men, three in their mid-teens and one aged 19, were arrested after a stolen car struck a Garda patrol car near Belgooly and was later stopped near Ballinhassig in the early hours of Tuesday 25 August 2026.

Gardaí from Kinsale tried to stop the car shortly after 2.30am as it left a housing estate in the Belgooly area. It did not stop, hit the patrol car and drove off.

Local and divisional units, including the Armed Support Unit, followed in a managed containment operation. A stinger had been laid across the road, and the car came to a stop near Ballinhassig village shortly before 3am.

Gardaí said the car, a BMW X5, had been stolen earlier that night in a burglary at a home in the Rochestown area of Cork. It has been taken for technical examination. Nobody was injured. The four were held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
