Work begins on ‘vital’ Galway community centre decades in the making

Shovels meet soil for Galway’s new health-focused community centre as Burns Construction & Civil Engineering has been chosen to take on the project.
Burns construction began the development of the 0.82 hectare Newcastle Community Centre, which residents have spent over two decades calling for.

The Newcastle Combined Community Association (NCCA) has carried out a series of preparatory works ahead of formal construction including an entrance road, roundabout, and 28 car parking spaces shared with the neighbouring school.
The centre will be located next to the existing Corí building on Moyola Park Lane.
“We are delighted to see the sod turning and the commencement of construction of the Newcastle Community Centre and outdoor facilities,” Seamus Davey, Chairperson of NCCA said.
“It has been a long journey, and this Centre will play a vital role in enhancing and strengthening local amenities, helping to revitalise and invigorate the community.”
The Newcastle Community Centre will feature sport and general-purpose halls, meeting rooms, a café, welfare facilities, sensory gardens, car parking, and a future astroturf pitch.
Completion is expected in Autumn of 2027.
