Two outdoor trails in Galway awarded funding for repair and resurfacing works

The first measure of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) has allocated funds to two projects in Galway.

This scheme provides development for outdoor recreational infrastructure including repairs, enhancement, and promotion. Measure one can consist of a granted amount up to €40,000 and include small scale projects in line with the scheme objectives. All projects should indicate and include accessibility for those with disabilities or older adults.

Small projects like these that are intended to continue the longevity of Ireland’s outdoor spaces and boost tourism are part of a larger initiative to do the same nationally. 221 recreational projects are being delivered around the country with a total of €8.7 million in funding being applied.

Cnoc an Choillín (Knocknahillion) will be in its second phase to extend the length of the trail while improving the surface and installing seating and an information panel to the trail. The lead applicant for this project is Forum Connemara CLG and received €27,000 in funding.

Galway County Council applied for 2km of surface repair of the Hymany Way, a trail that begins in Portumna and ends In Aughrim, along the Grand Canal towpath. This project was awarded €40,000.

Galway East TD Albert Dolan said: “The Hymany Way is a valuable local amenity, and this investment will help ensure it remains safe, accessible, and welcoming for locals and visitors alike. Today’s announcement is also a major boost for communities nationwide, delivering facilities that support health, wellbeing, and rural tourism.”

The remaining two measure for larger-scale projects are expected at the end of 2025.
