Two Galway fire stations to get new buildings after €16m funding boost

Two Galway fire stations are set to get new buildings after being allocated over €16 million in funding.
Galway City and Loughrea fire stations have been selected to receive funding under the Fire Services Capital Programme.
In an announcement this week, Housing, Local Government, and Heritage Minister, James Browne delivered €328.5 million to rebuild and refurbish fire stations throughout the country.
Galway City and Loughrea fire station have been selected among them.
The Galway City fire station on Father Griffin Road built in 1956, is only one of five full-time stations that received funding for a new build.
The new station is estimated to cost around €13 million including VAT.
Additionally, a new fire station at St Lawrence’s Fields in Loughrea, costing €3.4 million, will be fully funded.
The Loughrea station already has Part 8 planning permission from Galway County Council, with a contractor due to be appointed within the month.
In March, the Irish Independent reported Galway County Council projecting a one-year completion date by the time works commence in May.
The project received €1 million in 2021 under the same fire service programme.
“The Fire Services Capital Programme recognises that fire services are the last line of defence for communities,” Galway East TD Albert Dolan said. “This investment will ensure that Galway’s fire service personnel have the facilities, equipment and support they need now and into the future.”
