Three new pitches and sensory room planned in long-awaited Galway park revamp

Galway City Council has formally submitted a Part 10 planning application for the redevelopment of Kingston Park and Millers Lane in Rahoon.
The proposals, covering a five-hectare site, follow more than a year of community engagement, during which the council reported overwhelmingly positive feedback from local residents.
Under the plans, Kingston Park will undergo refurbishment alongside new development to the northern section of the site.
Millers Lane will see the upgrade and relocation of its two existing pitches: one to full soccer dimensions with 4G synthetic turf, and the other to hockey dimensions with 2G sand-filled surfacing. Both will be equipped with new fencing and floodlighting.
Further works at Kingston Park include the addition of a synthetic rugby pitch. Both sites will feature a new multi-use facility building, incorporating public and team changing rooms, activity spaces, general-purpose rooms, and reception areas.
The Kingston Park building will also house a sensory room and a commentary booth, with several rooms offering direct views of the playing fields.
Parking provision will be expanded to nearly 80 spaces, with facilities for coaches, bicycles, and set-down areas.
Submissions and observations on the application may be made to An Coimisiún Pleanála until 5.30pm on January 12, 2026. A decision is expected by mid-May 2026.
