Temporary closures at Galway city’s Blackrock Diving Tower as upgrade works announced

By Emma F. Smith, Irish Independent

Though sunny spells draw crowds to the Salthill diving tower, Galway swimmers should prepare for a temporary closure for refurbishment works on the popular summer spot.

Galway City Council has announced that Blackrock Diving Tower will be closed for works from some time from the end of April to May. However, the exact dates for these works have not been confirmed yet.

The closure is due to resurfacing works on the landing pad that has been destroyed by storms. They are expected to take approximately three days to complete.

“This closure is necessary to allow the works to be carried out safely and to ensure appropriate concrete curing times. Galway City Council will endeavour to schedule these works at times that minimise disruption, however, they must be undertaken during low-tide conditions and, ideally, during dry weather,” the council said.

The tower will also be closed for the erection of stainless-steel stairs on the other side of the tower and additional handrailing on the platform safeguarding a significant drop in rocks.

Galway City Council recognised this as a disruption and thanked the community for their patience as Blackrock is highly frequented by loungers and sea swimmers.

The council added: “Although temporary closures will be required, the long-term outcome will be a safer and improved amenity for all users. Further updates will be issued once the exact dates for these works are confirmed.

“We appreciate your cooperation and patience during these works and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The tower was also closed for three days at the end of March, the Irish Independent reported, to carry out “essential painting works.”
