Stop-go lights on Galway’s N65 to be removed after two years of traffic delays

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has given confirmation that the stop-go lights on the N65 will be removed in June after two years of traffic delays caused by them.

Galway East TD Louis O’Hara received confirmation from the TII the stop-go lights from the N65 at Heathlawn will be removed and replaced with a temporary culvert while the refurbishment works continue.

The commitment was given to Deputy O’Hara at this morning’s Oireachtas Transport Committee by Geraldine Fitzpatrick, TII’s Director of Capital Programmes.

She stated, cars will be able to pass on both sides with the temporary measure.

“Meanwhile the full procurement is ongoing. The design should be completed, and the procurement will happen in September with a view to construction of the ultimate solution later in the year,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.

Back in February, Deputy O’Hara requested a meeting with TII after discovering a €30,000 price tag on operating the stop-go lights over the course of two years.

The lights have also been a common source of traffic backup for commuters over the past two years.
