See the Christmas card art by Galway kids that might deck the halls of the Áras

A special Galway artist may soon see their creation proudly displayed on the fireplace mantle of Áras an Uachtaráin this holiday season, a warm Nollaig Shona Duit from Galway City.

This year, Galway City Mayor Mike Cubbard invited young artists to capture the magic of Christmas through pen and paper in his annual Christmas card competition.

The call was open to anyone aged 12 and under, with submissions due by November 17. With no set theme, children were free to let their imaginations sparkle.

Sharing a taste of the entries, Cllr Cubbard praised the “very creative kids” who took part. While the designs varied, Christmas stars and cheerful Irish-language greetings shone through many of the artworks.

The winning design – which will soon be selected by Mayor Cubbard’s three boys – will lead Santa’s sleigh this year as the official Christmas card sent to President Catherine Connolly, ambassadors, dignitaries, local groups, and more across the nation.

“I always try to find ways to connect the office of Mayor with young people, so this is just another way to engage with them. Good fun and great creations!!” Cllr Cubbard told the Irish Independent.

Although only one design will be printed as the official card, every submission will enjoy the spotlight. City Hall’s walls will be transformed into a festive gallery showcasing the young artists’ work throughout the Christmas season.

As Cllr Cubbard posted on Instagram: “The walls of City Hall belong to Galway’s youngest artists, as I have arranged for all entries to be displayed there over the Christmas period.”
