Rural Galway roads will be prioritised as a result of increased funding

Rural areas will be seeing upgrades to roads as a €2 million investment comes down the track.
The Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) has received a €14 million national increase which will support the repair and maintenance of non-public rural roads and laneways.
This increase brings the total LIS budget fort 2025 to €30 million, a record-breaking number.
Galway East TD Albert Dolan welcomed the additional funds saying: “These non-public roads and laneways might not always grab headlines, but they are absolutely essential for daily life in our countryside. They provide access to homes, farms, and vital outdoor amenities – from lakes to farmland and local heritage sites.”
Galway will be receiving just over €2 million in total, €840,000 of which comprises of the supplementary allocation.
“Since the scheme was reintroduced in 2017, almost €184 million has now been invested nationally, improving more than 4,800 rural roads. That’s real, on-the-ground impact for families, farmers, and rural enterprises.”
The scheme focuses on roads that are not maintained by the local authorities but are essential for rural communities, especially farmland and agricultural spaces. Following this increase, local authorities will now become responsible for identifying and prioritising the roads that will need servicing.
The local authorities have until the end of 2025 to complete these works.
