Public opinion sought ahead of Galway city CCTV rollout to tackle illegal dumping and littering

Galway City Council is seeking the public’s feedback ahead of rolling out CCTV cameras to combat littering and illegal dumping.
Public consultation is now open for the use of CCTV cameras in specific areas throughout the city known for littering and illegal dumping.
The cameras, the council explained, will be installed and operated solely to prevent littering and illegal dumping, and to support the enforcement of relevant legislation.
Many across the county have called for CCTV cameras to tackle littering, but the Data Protection Commission (DPC) raised concerns over data protection. However, new legislation introduced in 2024 laid out clearer guidelines for how relevant authorities handle the data and personal information that may be captured in monitoring.
Galway city Council has given the commitment to comply with these Codes of Practice in accordance with legal and ethical standards when in use.
The public have until Thursday, July 9 to make their submissions.
