Plans for new Galway bus stops unveiled but do not include shelter at town’s train station

Plans for the installation of new bus shelters at key commuter points across Galway have opened for public consultation.
Proposed locations include Barna, Spiddal, Lackagh, Caltra, Oranmore village and Oranmore train station.
Depending on the stop and route, some locations will feature fully enclosed shelters designed to protect passengers from severe weather, while others will include designated roadside bus cages with flagpole indicators marking the stop.
Oranmore is set to see two improvements, with new bus stops planned both in the village and at the train station.
The village proposal includes a fully enclosed, covered stop on Main Street outside Oranmore Public Library. The three-bay roofed shelter may also include ESB connectivity.
In addition to the village stop, a bus stop is proposed along Coast Road near the train station car park.
Current plans show a flagpole stop marker but no shelter at that location.
At present, the nearest direct bus stop to the station is located in Oranmore village, nearly 1.5km from the train platform.
Separately in Barna, plans for an eastbound stop serving buses travelling to Galway city include a fully sheltered waiting area opposite SuperValu in the village, in front of Happy Feet crèche.
In Spiddal, an enclosed bus shelter will replace the existing exposed Bus Éireann sign on the approach to the village when travelling toward Galway.
Final specifications for the shelters will be confirmed in line with guidance from the National Transport Authority (NTA).
The proposals are available to view on the Galway County Council website, with submissions open until 12pm on March 27.
