Old Galway tourism office torn down as demolition works begin after 15-year vacancy

The former Salthill tourism office in Galway city has been reduced to debris after demolition works began on Monday, January 12.
The small circular building, which has been unused for nearly 15 years, is located between the Seapoint Leisure Centre and Galway Atlantaquaria.
Galway City Councillor Niall McNelis said the demolition follows years of calls for the removal of the disused structure.
Writing on Facebook, Cllr McNelis noted that the site is planned to be rezoned from recreation and amenity use to a commercial zoning to support economic development.
Previous discussions had suggested the building could be incorporated into the aquarium as a penguin enclosure or repurposed as a business development hub. However, future plans for the site have yet to be confirmed.
A committee meeting of Galway West city councillors is scheduled for later this week, where further discussion on the site’s redevelopment may take place.
A fully operational tourism office continues to operate from Eyre Square, providing information and tours for visitors to the city.
