Old Galway Corporation Waterworks building to become water-based activity hub

A new water sports activity centre will be developed in the Old Galway Corporation Waterworks building on Dyke Road.

The redevelopment aims to create a best-in-class permanent water sports amenity for the city. The project is being funded by Fáilte Ireland under the second Platform for Growth Scheme, which prioritises year-round participation in water sports while also strengthening tourism. The scheme, launched in 2020, will deliver upgraded facilities to 19 sites across 13 counties.

Galway City Council chief executive Leonard Cleary said: “To be recognised internationally as a world class activity destination, it is crucial that Galway invests in compelling activity infrastructure, the visitor experience, and building the capacity of activity providers.”

The centre’s facilities will include changing areas, showers, accessible washrooms, toilets, secure storage, an induction space, and an external terrace. The original planning application also proposed a floating steel pontoon on the river with footways linking the building to the riverside.

The building earmarked for redevelopment sits in Terryland, beside the N6 and the River Corrib. With water-based activities increasingly popular year-round, the facilities are being designed to cater for all weather conditions and remain suitable throughout the colder, darker months as well as summer.

“The development of this facility will ensure the Galway tourism experience meets and exceeds all users’ expectations, including the enhancement of accessibility and improving participation for people with disabilities and older adults,” Mr Cleary added.

Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with the project approved under seven conditions.
