New Galway youth space opens as seven-year vision becomes reality

After a seven-year vision, Galway teens now have a designated hang space in Oranmore town centre.

The Oranmore Community Development Association (OCDA) is having the grand opening this week of Áras na nÓg, a designated space for youth, specifically in first year.

Centrally located across from St Mary’s Church, the welcome event will highlight the new space and all it has to offer, as well as some light refreshments.

Jonathan Kent, OCDA manager, told the Irish Independent that creating a safe and fun space for teenagers to commune in has been at the forefront of his mind since joining the community group seven years ago.

“I know that sounds like a long time for a plan to come to fruition but when you are working for a non-profit it can be difficult to get the funding sometimes,” Mr Kent added, giving a special thanks to Claire Conroy at Galway Rural Development for funding support.

Recently, the organisation was granted a €6,500 funding award from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs with the help of the Galway County Council.

“The idea for the Youth Space came mainly from my own personal experience as a teenager growing up. We had a great group of friends and, other than kicking a ball around, there was not much else to do, especially in the evening time when it got dark,” Mr Kent said.

“I remember numerous times the gardaí would be notified if our group was sitting on a wall outside our old primary school. Loitering, they told us.”

But when Mr Kent moved to Oranmore and heard similar complaints about the new teenage generation, the idea sparked.

“A place where teenagers can go to hang out, socialise, have some fun without the fear of being judged or getting into trouble.”

In 2025, the OCDA purchased two, second-hand buildings which are now used for community events, including the new Áras na nÓg.

Incorporated as a company in 1995, the OCDA strives to develop areas in Oranmore as well as bring the community together. The site consists of a large astroturf pitch, two 5-aside caged, and two grass football pitches.

A multi-purpose space is also a part of the association which hosts Oranmore’s first responders, Active in Age card players, sewing and art classes as well as communion, birthdays, and other events.

The opening event is set to take place April 1 and 2 from 2pm to 4pm. No tickets are required and families are welcome.
