New Galway fire station plans move to contractor phase as 2027 completion date set

A contractor will be appointed in the next month to start works on the new Loughrea fire station in County Galway.

Welcomed news of progress on the upgrade of the fire station at St Lawrence’s Fields on Athenry Road, Loughrea, came forward at the March Galway County Council meeting.

The deadline seeking interest for main contractors ended on March 13.

According to this month’s management report, an appointment is to be made by mid-April with works commencing in May and taking approximately one year to be completed.

Construction was supposed to commence in late 2025.

Part 8 planning was submitted for the development in late 2024 to see a newly constructed, three-bay fire station with training accommodations in place of the 75-year-old existing fire station.

Under the Fire Service Capital Programme in 2021, Loughrea received €1 million to see a new fire station.

In December 2024, the Part 8 plans were brought before elected members and faced requests for deferment in order to allow community groups to come before the council with concerns on the development.

A vote for deferment did not pass and elected members ultimately gave approval for the plan. 71 submissions were made.

Loughrea Galway County Councilor ‘Moegie’ Maher said this welcomed progress has been decades in the making.
