New football pitch in Galway named after beloved local volunteer

A new park in the city of Galway has been named after a beloved local volunteer and football club president.

Newly elected mayor Mike Cubbard saw the fruit of a proposal he put forward in June 2021 as the new football pitch at Corrib Park was officially named after Pat Manogue.

Pat is a beloved member of the community and is recognised for his tireless work as a local soccer volunteer and the Corrib Rangers Football Club President.

Pat Monogue Park (Páirc Pheait Uí Mhuineog) was celebrated by the former Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Peter Keane, on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Along with the proposal for naming the park, the Council agreed to form a Civic Naming and Commemorative Committee to review procedures and decisions regarding the naming of publicly owned lands and building in the city after persons.

This same committee reviewed the recent naming of the Henry Street Playground after Galway’s first female mayor, Mary Byrne.
