Minister break ground on Galway’s €23m social housing development

Housing, Local Government, and Heritage Minster James Browne broke ground on a €23.6 million housing development in Galway that marks the first council-led shared equity housing scheme the county has seen.
The Baile Chláir development plan, in Claregalway, consists of 88 mixed sized homes – both social and affordable units. Opened landscaping for outdoor use and community spaces are in the plans as well as a creche and a playground.
Construction is set to begin this week, and the project is expected to finish in September 2026.
As part of his visit to County Galway, Minister Browne officially opened two additional housing projects: 10-unit social housing scheme at Caisleán Raithin in Ardrahan and a 29-unit development in Tuam at Pairc na Cille.
Galway County Council director of services Damien Mitchell said at the site: “Located within 10km of Galway City, the Baile Chláir development is in a highly desirable area with schools and essential services close by. As part of the Galway MASP area and within the Gaeltacht, some units will be reserved for those supporting and promoting the Irish language and culture. Completion of the scheme will deliver much-needed, affordable, and high-quality homes for the community.”
Along with members of Galway County Council, Minister Browne also visited the recently redeveloped Tuam Station House that is being turned into a multi-use community centre. Additionally, he inspected the works of the Oranmore train station as pedestrian and cycle passes are being added.
Speaking in Baile Chláir, Minister Browne said: "These projects are a clear demonstration of how this Government is actively supporting local authorities such as Galway County Council in delivering a comprehensive programme of investment across housing, transport, and community infrastructure. This work is transforming local areas and laying the foundation for vibrant, sustainable communities.”
“We fully recognise that the delivery of new homes must be matched by the provision of essential infrastructure—enterprise hubs, transport links, and community facilities. When individuals and families receive the keys to their new homes, they need more than just a roof over their heads, but they also require transport links, employment opportunities and amenities to create liveable, vibrant communities.
The development making way at Baile Chláir is being supported by €12 million in funding from Minister Browne’s department.
