By Emma F. Smith, Irish Independent

Expansion works in a rural school in Co Galway have begun following a €5 billion investment to modernize school buildings across Ireland.

Construction works at Coláiste Cholmcille in Inverin began this week, the school announced.

The upgrades are funded under the Large Scale, Additional Accommodation, Modular, and Annual September Accommodation Needs programme in the National Development Sectoral Investment plan.

The project has been handed over to Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB) to manage and carry out.

Galway County Council approved planning permission for the renovations in July 2022. The project will see an extension to the 4,368sqm building over its three floors. The plans include classrooms and specialist teaching spaces, a multipurpose hall, a special education unit as well as office and reception space.

There will be 45 car parking spaces included in the project, with one electric vehicle charging station. Two ancillary buildings on the site built in the 1950s will be demolished to make provision for the upgrades.

Galway County planning offices approved the expansion subject to 22 conditions.
