Industrial action forces Galway City Museum to shut for second consecutive weekend

Industrial action by public sector trade unions has forced Galway City Museum to close for a second consecutive weekend.
Acting Director of Galway City Museum Adam Stoneman notified council staff on Thursday, October 8, that the museum would be closed on Saturday, October 10, due to short staffing.
“This is due to short staffing and the requirements for safe evacuation of the building in the event of an emergency,” Mr Stoneman said.
Mr Stoneman said the museum would resume normal opening hours at 10am on Tuesday, October 13.
The museum also closed on Saturday, October 3, for the same reason.
“Galway City Council will endeavour to minimise the negative impact of the industrial action on the public,” Mr Stoneman said. “Hopefully, a resolution can be found soon.”
Industrial action began on September 30 in a dispute over public sector pay, with work-to-rule measures affecting more than 100,000 public sector workers nationwide, including teachers, nurses, civil servants and special needs assistants.
Further strikes by public sector unions are scheduled for October 14 and October 21.
