Galway’s new city hall delayed once again as project runs three years behind schedule

Galway City Council’s relocation to its new Crown Square headquarters has been delayed yet again, with officials now projecting occupation in the first quarter of 2027.

The latest setback adds to a backlog of more than two years. Earlier this year, councillors were told a full new build was the most cost effective option, with completion targeted for the end of 2026.

In July, Chief Executive Leonard Cleary had warned that failing to move into the development acquired in 2022 would be “fiscal folly” while Cllr Eddie Hoare commented that “every second or minute that goes by is costing us money.”

When the building was first purchased, the estimated move in date was December 2023. Since then, delays have cost the council almost €3 million.

Also in July, councillors approved seeking a historic €60 million loan to fund a range of capital projects, including the new civic offices.

In the meantime, the building itself has depreciated by €8m since its acquisition. The total cost of the fit out has not yet been disclosed to the public.

At the latest Galway City Council’s plenary meeting on Monday, management confirmed that the detailed design of the improved City Hall has now been completed, with tenders due this week.

The plan is to appoint a contractor by February, with a 42 week fit out running through December 2026. That schedule would see staff move in early the following year.

Some councillors voiced frustration at the revised timeline. Cllr Frank Fahy pointed to the neighbouring Radisson Red hotel, which was built at the same time of Crown Square. The 177 room hotel has already marked its first anniversary.
