Galway’s first year-round indoor market closes after six months

Galway’s first year-round indoor market has closed its doors in the new year after operating as a community and trading space for six months.
The Green Market in Moycullen opened on July 5, 2025, hosting a rotating mix of vendors, workshops, and community events. The project grew out of Locky’s Wonder Emporium, a holiday pop-up focused on sustainable and eco-friendly goods.
The closure was announced via The Green Market’s Instagram page, which states that the business “has commenced a Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation. Further updates will be issued by the appointed liquidator in due course.”
Supporters expressed disappointment on social media following the announcement. One Facebook commenter said there was “so much work poured into creating a welcoming and creative space,” while another described the market as a “great initiative.”
According to Executive Director Lochlann Scott, the idea for the market emerged after responding to calls for collaboration from local vendors, highlighting a need for a dedicated space in Moycullen where makers and small businesses could sell sustainable products.
Open on Fridays and Saturdays, the market featured fruit and vegetable producers, local food and drink vendors, and artisan goods, alongside art exhibitions and repair cafés. Traders included BakeBox, Fréamh Farm, Galway Pure Honey, Noble Ice Cream, and others. The space also hosted flower sellers and local craftspeople.
Beyond trading, The Green Market functioned as a community hub, offering art and craft workshops, parent-and-toddler sessions, storytelling events, and a series of small lectures. During the holiday season, the venue held instrumental concerts, wreath-making workshops, and community carolling.
Conamara councillor Noel Thomas called the closure “truly a pity” saying “it was a lovely idea that brought the community together.”
"It will be unfortunate to witness empty commercial units left in its absence, a reminder of what once thrived in that space,” he added.
