Galway train station opens new platforms with a peak into the completed works slated for Autumn

By Emma F. Smith, Irish Independent

New developments beneath the distinctive roof at Galway’s Ceannt Station offer a clear sense of how the station will look once its redevelopment is complete.

The project has now entered a new phase, with Platforms 3 and 4 opening on the southern side of the station.

Passengers will now enter and exit on the southern side of the station and enjoy access to the new southern concourse including a new waiting room, new toilet facilities and use of the new ticket validators.

The northern side of the station and Platform 1 will now close for redevelopment works.

Meanwhile, works on Platform 2 continue and are expected to be complete over the coming months.

It marks the first public use of part of the upgraded space, which features ticket scanners, the station’s signature dome-style roofing, and a more modern architectural design. This latest phase opened on Saturday, April 18.

Construction on the €24m redevelopment began late last year and is expected to continue until late summer.

Once complete, the project will deliver three additional platforms, a new main entrance — partially opened this weekend — a glass dome roof, and improved accessibility throughout the station.
