Galway town's new waste and recycling facility to be completed by end of the year

The town of Gort, County Galway, will see the addition of a recycle and household waste facility by the end of the year.
Galway County Council have announced that Gort will be the fourth town in Co Galway to home a Civic Amenity Site located one kilometre from the town centre.
The site will be a disposal area for recyclable household waste materials like large household items including furniture, hazardous waste, recyclable items, timber, hard drives, and other electronic equipment.
Some goods are subject to a small fee for disposal.
Items that are free of charge for disposal are: Batteries (Solid, Household & Lead Acid Batteries), clothing, footwear, textiles, drink cans, fluorescent tubes, lamps, glass jars, bottles, light bulbs (CFL & LED only), Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE), white goods, fridges, and freezers.
Chief Executive of Galway County Council Liam Conneally noted that adding this centre to serve South Galway will be one step forward in the plan to meet circular economy goals by 2030.
“This facility supports national policy, meets a clear local need and provides for and maintains an equitable spread of Civic Amenity sites across County Galway, which is one of the objectives of the Galway County Development Plan.”
A contract worth nearly €500,000 was signed with Kenny Civils & Plant Ltd for the construction that is expected to be complete by the end of 2026.
The facility will be managed by Barna Recycling under an Environmental Protection Agency license.
Opening hours and fees for existing facilities in Tuam, Ballinasloe, and Clifden can be found on the council website.
