Galway St Patrick’s Day parade to include safe viewing space for autistic children

A designated space for families with autistic and neurodivergent children will be available for this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade in Galway city.
The Access Team at the Galway City Council has partnered with AsIAm, Ireland’s Autism Charity and Marcy Primary School to provide a Relaxed Parade Space.
The space will feature a calm and quiet viewing area for those with sensory needs. In addition to extra space for movement, there will be designated toilet access.
Everyone is encouraged to observe the parade in whatever way feels best for them and their family’s needs including protective earmuffs.
“Our relaxed space will support those who access it to have a more predictable, comfortable and judgement free celebration on a day where the sensory environment, plans and crowds can be inaccessible for many in our community,” CEO of AsIAm Adam Harris said.
AsIAm recently opened a Community Support Hub in Liosbaun Industrial estate that provides free services to Autistic people throughout their life.
Mercy Primary School across from the Town Hall Theatre on St Francis St will be hosting those who register with Galway City Council.
Places in the Relaxed Parade Space are limited, and those wishing to attend are asked to register in advance by emailing Events@GalwayCity.ie.
