Galway skate park wins Irish Construction Excellence award after €400,000 revamp

By Emma F. Smith, Irish Independent

Galway city’s Doughiska skate park, which re-opened in late 2025 following refurbishment, has won an Irish Construction Excellence (ICE) award.

In an awards ceremony held in Dublin on May 28, Senior Engineer Sharon Connolly accepted the award in the Leisure and Tourism category on behalf of Galway City Council.

There were only nine awards given out within that category, Ms Connolly said announcing the win during a council meeting.

The park was recognised for it’s premier construction.

“It’s been a real game changer in Doughiska and the surrounding area,” Councillor Alan Cheevers told the Irish Independent. “The amount of children and teenagers that are using the skate park is unbelievable. It is full morning, noon and night.”

“[The] award really was in recognition of the project and to the council themselves for bringing this project.

Upon re-opening, the newly refurbished skate park saw a modern and inclusive layout that featured technically advanced routes for skateboarders, BMX riders, roller skaters and scooter users.

The project cost approximately €400,000 in total.

The ICE awards were founded in 1993 by Irish Building magazine to recognise premier performance in construction projects across the country.
