By Emma F. Smith, Irish Independent

Galway has received the second highest allocation for small-scale equipment and infrastructure upgrades in local libraries.

Second to Dublin City, Galway will receive €200,128 under the Libraries Capital Programme. The funding will be used to upgrade sensory equipment, ICT and broadband, accessibility, and furniture.

The Libraries Capital Programme 2023-2027 will invest a total of €22.6 million for 11 nationwide projects. In this year’s announcement, €3 million was allocated.

Additionally, €2.6 million will be invested in 12 mobile library vehicles.

Galway County Council recently signed contracts with Alegria-Activity, a Spanish company which will create two mobile library units with bus-like infrastructure.

Despite the mobile library service running for more than 65 years, Galway’s current mobile library van has been down for repairs.

“This funding will support practical improvements that make a real difference, from enhanced accessibility for people with disabilities, to improved sensory spaces and faster digital connectivity. These upgrades will ensure our libraries remain modern, welcoming and fit for purpose,” Galway East TD Albert Dolan said in a statement.

“As a Member of the Public Accounts Committee, I have consistently highlighted the importance of transparency and value in public spending. This is a positive example of targeted investment delivering tangible benefits for communities right across the country.”

“I particularly welcome the focus on inclusion and accessibility, ensuring that our libraries are open and accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability or background,” he added.
