Galway schools secure slice of €90m funding announced for sustainable summer glow up

Twenty Galway schools have secured a slice of the €90m earmarked for the 2026 Climate Action Summer Works Scheme.

The scheme is designed to fast-track essential upgrades that can be carried out over the summer months, helping schools move closer to the county’s wider climate-action targets. Of the total €90m allocation, roughly a third is being directed towards upgrading and refurbishing science laboratories in post-primary schools.

Almost 300 projects nationwide have been approved for completion, including schools still awaiting works from last year’s round.

Galway East TD Albert Dolan said the selected schools represent vital local facilities, adding that schemes like this mark a “major step forward” in Ireland’s climate goals.

A broad range of works qualified schools for consideration, including roof, mechanical and electrical upgrades, toilet refurbishments, energy-efficiency improvements, new windows, external environmental projects and science lab upgrades, all with climate action at their core. Schools were permitted to apply for only one project under these categories.

“I particularly welcome the strong climate action focus within the scheme,” Deputy Dolan said. “Many of our local schools will now be able to undertake crucial sustainability works, such as insulation upgrades, LED lighting, EV charger installation, and active travel facilities, that will reduce energy costs while supporting national climate commitments.”

The Galway schools receiving funding are: S N Muire, S N Padraig Naofa, S N Padraic Naofa, Scoil Mhuire, Scoil Bhreandain Naofa, S N Bheanain, St Oliver Plunkett National School, Clonberne Central School, Kilchreest Central School, Glinsk N S, S N Mhic Dara, Ardscoil Mhuire, St. Cuan’s College, Dominican College, Jesus & Mary Secondary School, Coláiste Chroí Mhuire, St. Jarlath’s College, Galway Community College, Dunmore Community School and Gort Community School.

Six of the selected schools are located in Galway City.

Education Minister Helen McEntee has said the Government remains committed to maintaining annual funding approvals for the Climate Action Scheme as part of the National Development Plan.
