Galway road closures announced as city’s cycle scheme moves into next phase

By Emma F. Smith, Independent.ie

As phase 1 of the Bóthar Stiofáin Cycle Network scheme is nearly completed, Galway city residents have been notified of further road closures in the area.

Works will resume after the Christmas period on January 21, with a 24-hour southbound road closure in place from Rahoon Road to the entrance of Gateway Shopping Park. The closure will begin on January 19 and is expected to remain in effect until March 30.

The project is concluding Phase 1 and will move into Phase 2, which covers the 2D (Riasc Na Rí), 2C (Cloch Ard) and 2E (Sliabh Ard) sections of the road.

During this period, residents exiting estates along Bóthar Stiofáin will be required to turn left and divert towards Rahoon Road. Access to the estates will be maintained via the northbound lane from the Western Distributor Road.

Parking and driveway access for homes directly facing Bóthar Stiofáin will be coordinated to ensure continued access throughout the works.

At a West area meeting at City Hall this week, council management said additional pressure had been placed on the project ahead of Christmas to ensure its timely completion.

While acknowledging the inconvenience, officials said residents would not be significantly disrupted, noting that the diversion route is less than 600 metres and does not involve traffic lights. They also said the northbound lane typically carries approximately 60pc of traffic between the roundabout and Rahoon Road.
