Galway residents lose pedestrian access during hotel construction at Tonery’s pub as works commence

By Emma F. Smith, Independent.ie

Pedestrian access between a Galway City housing estate and the busy Bohermore Road, used daily by residents travelling to bus stops, shops and the city centre, has been closed following the commencement of construction works on a major hotel development.

Earlier this month, residents who regularly crossed through the former Tonery’s pub car park to access Bohermore Road were met with a locked gate and signage prohibiting pedestrian entry.

Works have since officially begun at the site, which will involve the demolition of the long-established Tonery’s pub and the construction of a 180-room Marriott Aloft hotel.

Signage erected at the entrance to the site, branded by Stewart Construction, reads: “Please note by order of the property owner, this car park will be closed to the public and no longer available from 5pm Friday, November 28, 2025. Any vehicle parked within this area after this date will be parked illegally, clamped, and removed.”

The closure prompted residents to question its legality on online forums, citing conditions attached to the planning permission which appeared to require the preservation of pedestrian access through the site.

Condition 3 of the planning approval states that “the developer shall ensure public access via the proposed cycle/pedestrian route traversing the site is secured through the site, during the hours of 0600 and 2300.”

However, Galway City Council has clarified that the condition applies only once construction has been completed. A council spokesperson said that Condition 13 of the permission “specifically refers to following its completion and prior to the occupation of the development,” allowing for access restrictions during the construction phase.

Stewart Construction confirmed to the Irish Independent that pedestrian access will remain closed until construction is complete and the site is deemed safe for public use.
