Galway pier may see added bus services for ferry commuters

A request for a new Local Link service to connect with a Galway island ferry port is to be submitted to the National Transport Authority (NTA).
Galway County councillors representing Connemara have agreed to seek a Local Link route providing a direct service from the Inishbofin ferry port in Cleggan to Westport or Galway.
Additional stops are also being proposed in Clifden and surrounding areas to support a higher frequency of transport for island commuters.
Councillor Eileen Mannion put forward the motion. She said ferry timetables must be taken into account if additional stops are introduced.
The motion stated: “At present, people travelling to and from Inishbofin Island have to rely on the Citylink service, which is not a direct route between Cleggan and Clifden, and there are often long delays.”
From Galway, there are just three daily departures and return services, beginning at 8am, with up to 20 stops on each route.
The last service departs Galway at 4pm, while the final return journey leaves Cleggan at 5.45pm.
No service is available connecting Cleggan and Westport, however Citylink services Clifden which is approximately 11km away from the pier.
While the Citylink route serves Cleggan Pier from Galway, there is no dedicated Local Link service to the pier.
The motion was unanimously passed in the chamber by Connemara councillors.
