Galway park to receive over €200k in funding while major development in the pipeline

A family-friendly park in the Oranmore area of County Galway is in line to receive the latest round of funding from the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), as Rinville Park will receive a €246,000 injection for its next phase of development.

The funding, announced this week, forms part of a rolling programme aimed at enhancing outdoor amenities across the country. The Rinville allocation will go towards the creation of 2.5km of new, well-lit walkways and upgraded surfacing, a move welcomed by local representatives.

Galway County Councillor Cillian Keane, who resides in the area, hailed the investment as a vital step forward for the community.

Posting on social media, Cllr Keane described the project as “an important local initiative” and told the Irish Independent that the vision for Rinville extends well beyond the current works.

“At this time, Oranmore GAA are accessing their site through Rinville Park,” he said as he added connecting the two facilities in a “complete amenity hub” is in the vision.

“There's going to be a major revamp of facilities there,” he added. “There's also a master plan being carried out for the park by Galway County Council and City Council at the moment with an aim to further develop the park.”

While the €246,000 allocation marks a substantial investment, Cllr Keane noted that it is just the beginning. “Even though that's a significant sum of money, it's only the first part of a larger plan for the park.”

The Rinville announcement comes as part of a broader national funding package revealed earlier this week, with 63 outdoor recreation projects across the country set to share in a €16.5 million pot aimed at enhancing trails, parks, and other public amenities.
