Galway N83 set for €4m upgrade as concerns grow over roadworks’ impact on traffic

Claregalway, Co Galway, is set to use the €4 million in roads project funding given in February to begin pavement works on the N83 and traffic calming measures, but concerns were raised over the traffic the works might cause.

In the 2026 Roads Investment Programme announcement last month, Claregalway received €2.5 million for pavement overlay works and €1.5 million for traffic calming and pavement restoration.

The N83 between Claregalway and Parkmore is next in line to receive pavement overlay works given the outstanding tender accepts the proposal and a contract is awarded.

Speaking to the Irish Independent Councilor David Collins said a letter of intent was issued to the “most economically advantageous tender” in early February after the review of submissions.

“There will be a bit of upheaval, but it will be worth it in the long run,” Cllr Collins said, depending on the type of large machinery that will be used.

Concern was raised at the Athnery/Oranmore municipal district meeting over diverting traffic through rural roads if construction is to take place during the day.

“We now must ensure that consultation happens with residents and business owners in relation to works and making sure that there is the minimum disruption to their lives and businesses.”

In addition, traffic calming and drainage works are in the final design stages for Claregalway which Cllr Collins is hopeful will see the tendering process in late Spring. If all goes to plan, works will officially begin by late Autumn 2026.

Completion of all works are expected to take between 12 and 18 months.
