Galway island set for stricter harbour rules to curb pier advertising

Galway County Council is set to tighten harbour rules on Inis Mór, in a bid to reduce the level of commercial solicitation as ferries arrive on the island.

Galway County Council is seeking to amend the Cill Rónáin Harbour bye-laws on Inis Mór, the largest of the three Aran Islands, to include regulating only two buses on the pier at any one time.

The proposed measures aim to reduce the level of solicitation on the pier before visitors enter the island proper.

The plan is expected to be implemented for the summer season, with engagement due to take place in the coming weeks between bus operators and ferry companies on the island.

At a recent Connemara Municipal District meeting, the proposal was welcomed but concerns were raised about scheduling buses to ensure congestion does not occur on the pier.

The bye-laws state that any solicitation of business, advertising or canvassing is prohibited without the approval of the Harbour Master.
