Galway councillor welcomes new baby boy as brother takes over council duties

As Galway County Councillor Karey McHugh Farag welcomed a new baby boy this week, a family member has been nominated to take over her chair for a short stint.
Stephen McHugh, Cllr McHugh Farag’s brother, appeared at the June Galway County Council meeting to fill the vacancy of his sister as she welcomed her second child, Sean.
This will be the second time Mr McHugh will be stepping in to represent Tuam after Cllr McHugh Farag took maternity leave in September of 2023 – the first serving councillor to do so.
Speaking shortly in the chamber following his nomination, Mr McHugh said: “It’s a great opportunity to be able to speak about local things that happen in the Tuam area.”
In addition to acting as an interim representative, Mr McHugh will also be serving on various committees held by his sister including the Environment Protection and Agriculture Strategic Policy Committee as well as the Local Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committee (LTACC).
Cllr McHugh Farag will take six months leave to be with her new family.
